About the Artwork

Mona working on a flamingo painting.

I am following an animal inspired life path and they are the only subject I feel passionate enough about to paint. While animals are the main focus of my paintings it is the textures and patterns in nature that fascinate me.

My work is done in two different mediums and each has it's own distinctive look. The water-soluble pencil work is strongly realistic with every hair painted in. I use 140# hot-press watercolor paper even though much of the work is done dry. I do multiple layering of color until I achieve the intensity I desire. This attention to detail is meticulous and time consuming, often resulting in many weeks spent per piece.

Currently, I am creating with oil pastels on 100% cotton rag board. The pastel work is much looser and more painterly looking with a bolder use of color. These paintings take far fewer hours to complete. The pastel pieces are not so much about exact lines as they are about making connections with animals on a more emotional and spiritual level.
