I have always lived and worked in the company of animals, they are my true
passion. Growing up in a small rural town in Minnesota, most of my free time
was spent riding horses, exploring nature, drawing and reading. I have not
had formal training in the arts but I came from an artistic family where
creativity in all forms was encouraged.
After I attained my degree in veterinary technology, I worked in an animal
clinic as well as an equestrian facility, a greyhound kennel and a wildlife
park. At the park I helped to raise a variety of animals including wolves,
bear and mountain lion. I loved working with the wild animals and I learned
a great deal about their behaviors. All the while I continued to draw and
experiment with a variety of media.
I started taking my art more seriously about the time I married my husband,
Mike in 1990. I changed careers and started working as a picture framer.
Mike built a large drafting table for me and I worked on my art in the late
hours of the evening. I still have this table in my studio at home. In 1994
I decided to start my own business. So I could concentrate on what I loved
to do best, my artwork.
In 1995 we made the decision to move to Iowa to work on Mike's family farm.
We farmed organically, raising mostly food grade grain crops. Having moved
from the Black Hills I find I still miss the scenery but rural Iowa has a
beauty and charm all it's own. I am quite happy with farm life, as it allows
me to have a small menagerie of critters which are a constant joy.
In 2000 we opened Wild Faces Gallery & Frame in Rolfe. Three years later Mike
moved full time into the art business with me and we expanded our space at the
gallery to include a separate room for our Giclee printers. We are
self-publishing which allows for greater control of production and image
quality. Mike handles the technical aspects of the business. He has an
extensive background in computer technology and has written some of the
software we use for color profiling.
