A Tail Too Long - Scarlet Macaw

"A Tail Too Long"

Scarlet Macaw

This scarlet macaw painting is actually two separate paintings made up to make the whole. The title is sort of a tongue in cheek thing for me as that's exactly what the issue was. I ran out of paper. At the time this painting was created the method in which I worked meant I created the image as while painting. Meaning no sketch was done ahead of time. I would just begin with the eye (always the eye) and worked around from there. On this piece as I progressed down the page I soon realized I was out of paper and the tail portion was longer than I had anticipated. Thus the name "A Tail Too Long."

In the end I loved it more as a diptych and is was one of those happy accidents that added so much to the final artwork. Not to mention it also brought a visual interest in the framing.

The original painting of this scarlet macaw was done on Arches 140# hot press watercolor paper using watercolor pencils.
